Zoning Board of Adjustment
The Hanover Zoning Board of Adjustment consists of five full members and up to five alternate members appointed for three-year terms by the Board of Selectmen. The Zoning Board acts in the nature of a court in deciding petitions and requests involving the application of the provisions of the Zoning Ordinance to specific properties and situations. It is important to note that, because of this judicial character of the Board, no Board member is allowed to discuss any aspect of a case with anyone outside of a duly notified public hearing about that case. The responsibilities of the Board include: § To hear and act on requests for Variances from the strict application of the terms of the Zoning Ordinance; § To hear and act on requests for Special Exceptions as provided in the Zoning Ordinance; § To hear and act on requests for Equitable Waivers as allowed in state statute (RSA 674:33-a); § To hear and act on Appeals from Administrative Decisions. In addition, the Zoning Board often provides advice to the Planning Board about potential amendments to the Zoning Ordinance. The Zoning Board of Adjustment ordinarily meets twice a month at 7:00 PM at the Town Hall: public hearings about specific cases on the fourth Thursday of each month at which public input is invited, and a deliberative session the following week which is open to the public to observe but not participate.
