With spring on the way, our woodland neighbors are out and about enjoying the hint of warmer weather. That also means more frequent human encounters with wildlife, including black bears.
In Hanover, there have been several sightings reported of black bears and their cubs. Black bears usually avoid humans and reside throughout most forested areas. However, a black bear might attack if it feels threatened.
We encourage all residents to be “Bear Wise”. Most bear problems can be averted by removing or controlling things known to attract bears like bird/pet food, garbage and smells like grease and food residue on barbecues.
Emergency and non-emergency bear encounters and when it is appropriate to call 9-1-1.
An emergency black bear encounter is described as situations such as a bear entering a school yard when school is in session, entering or trying to enter a residence, wandering into a public gathering, killing livestock/pets and lingering at the site and stalking people while lingering around for an extended period of time.
Residents are asked to call 9-1-1 in all emergency situations, including those involving wildlife.
Non-emergency situations include a bear roaming around and checking a garbage can, breaking into a shed where garbage or food is stored, is in a tree pulling down a bird feeder, knocking over a barbecue or moving through a backyard or field but not lingering
In non-emergency situations, residents should contact their local Police Department by calling 643-2222.
